Text only available in German: Die Heckler & Koch VP 70 ist die 3-Schuss-Seriefeuer-Version der Heckler & Koch VP 70-Z.   VP in der Produktbezeichnung stand ursprünglich für "Vollautomatische Pistole", wird aber oft umgangssprachlich als "Volkspistole" bezeichnet, was jedoch jeglicher Grundlage entbehrt.   Die Heckler & Koch VP 70 (oder HK VP 70-M, M für Militär) war die vollautomatische Version, welche mit angebrachtem Anschlagschaft auch Drei-Schuss-Serien feuern konnte. Die Waffe fand im Anschlagschaft auch eine Art Holster, so wie dies bereits bei der Mauser C96 der Fall war.   Für den zivilen Markt wurde eine rein halbautomatische Variante, die Heckler & Koch VP 70-Z (Z für zivil), produziert.   Die beiden Modelle waren eine der ersten Pistolen, welche mit Polymergriffstück hergestellt wurden; die Entwicklung erfolgte gut 10 Jahre vor den sehr berühmten und verbreiteten Glock Pistolen. Auch der gleichbleibende Abzug, man könnte ihn Double-Action-Only nennen, war eine Neuigkeit bei Pistolen, welche erst viel später wieder Einzug bei Pistolen fand.   Die Pistolen sind unverriegelte Rückstosslader, der Abzug ist grottenschlecht und benötigt eine grosse Kraft bei langem Weg.   Die Heckler & Koch VP 70 wurde von 1970 bis 1984 hergestellt.   Die Herstellung der Heckler & Koch VP 70-Z erfolgte von 1973 bis 1989 (ca. 23'689 Stück).
