Die Gewehre wurden aus Infanteriegewehren 1889/96 umgeändert und tragen deren Waffennummer. Die Umänderung erfolgte in der Reihenfolge, in welcher die bestehenden Waffen zurückgezogen werden konnten, und nicht, wie teilweise vermerkt, nach Nummernbereichen.
