Auf der Oberseite des Laufes ist zweizeilig beschriftet. Zwischen 1856 und 1872 hatte Smith & Wesson ein Monopol am Markt für Patronenrevolver. Mit der Einführung des Smith & Wesson No 1 im Jahre 1856 war der erste Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Patronenrevolver gemacht. Da Colt und Remington patentrechtlich gebunden waren, konnten diese offiziell noch keine Hinterlader-Revolver einführen. Colt versuchte es mit dem Umbau zum Colt-Thuer-Revolver, bei dem die Patronen von vorne in die hinten geschlossene Trommel eingepresst wurden und die Firma Remington Remington New Model Army erwarb eine Lizenz bei S&W zur Herstellung von Umbausätzen für seine Perkussionsrevolver, um diese zu Hinterladern umzubauen – so genannte Conversions.
