Das Japanische Schwert

Colin m. Roach

The significance of the sword went far beyond its weapon properties for Japanese warriors. Their swords were both deadly tools and divine companions—social and religious icons, at the same time a symbol of their social status for the samurai. Moreover, it was a technological and artisanal gem. Many experts consider it the crown of sword creation.

This richly illustrated book explores the original influences, traces the historical development of the Japanese sword, and follows the progress from its beginnings to its heyday. By bringing together the findings of various scientific disciplines, Roach uses his expertise to take the reader on this path to the perfection of the sword.

The spiritual symbolism of the sword is discussed just as much as the refined metallurgical techniques of its manufacture. Similarly, the book deals with the demanding technical exercises of the skilled swordsmen.

In his extensive research work, Roach collaborated with esteemed craftsmen, historians, and martial arts experts. Rare insights into the world of sword smiths and sword polishers are also provided.
