Créé en 1984 sous l'appellation de 6e régiment étranger de génie, il a été renommé 1er REG en 1999 lors de la création d'un deuxième régiment de génie légion. Le régiment remplit des missions d'appui à la mobilité, à la contre-mobilité et d'aide au déploiement d'urgence, ainsi que des missions de participation directe au combat, notamment en milieu urbain et lors de conflits asymétriques. Il est également spécialisé dans les opérations amphibies et le combat fluvial.
