| Couteau appelé Kriss Île de Java, Indonésie XIXème siècle Bois, pamor, os, galuchat Long. totale : 70 ; Long. lame : 52 cm Poignée, appelée ukiran, en os de bovin et galuchat rouge. Lame en pamor à un tranchant. Fourreau en bois recouvert de galuchat et d’os de bovin. Monture postérieure. Le kriss est une arme proprement masculine. Marqueur social et de richesse, il était également l’objet symboliquement offert à un jeune garçon devenu homme. Plus la lame était travaillée et plus la poignée réalisée en matériaux nobles, plus le rang de son propriétaire était élevé. L’ukiran, sculpté de manière anthropomorphe quasi systématiquement, est considéré comme une allégorie de son propriétaire. Ainsi, la tête serait la poignée, le corps, la lame et le vêtement, le fourreau. Notons que le vêtement traditionnel de l’homme balinais est le sarong– le même nom donné au fourreau du kriss.
