| Neuwaffe. Im Jahr 1871 erhielt ein Mitarbeiter von Colt namens Charles Richards ein Patent für die Umrüstung von Colt-Perkussionsmodellen auf Hinterlader-Patronenrevolver. Der Umbau der Richards-Patrone war sofort ein Erfolg. Am 2. Juli 1872 erhielt William Mason, ein weiterer Mitarbeiter von Colt, ein Patent für eine Verbesserung des Richards-Modells. Da die Percussion-Teile knapp wurden, wurde der Richards-Mason-Lauf von 1860 vom Profil des früheren Percussion-Modells auf das schlanke Profil des Open Top von 1871-72 umgestellt. Der verbesserte Umbau der New Army aus dem Jahr 1858 wurde um 1873 von Remington mit einem speziellen, werkseitig eingebauten zweiteiligen Zylinder eingeführt, wobei der Ladehebel übrig blieb und ein Auswerfer hinzugefügt wurde.
