Hinter dem Eintritt in die als Speerspitze zur Durchsetzung einer mittlerweile überholten Kolonialpolitik in Verruf geratenen Truppe stand zumeist Problemflucht. Auslöser waren das miese Leben als Scheidungswaise, unehelich Geborener oder Verdingter, eine verkrachte Ehe, ein Schuldenberg, Arbeitslosigkeit, eine enttäuschte Jugendliebe(?) Und zur Hälfte: kriminelle Vergehen aller Art. Die oft unter einem Pseudonym untertauchenden Bewerber erwartete knüppelharte Ausbildung, hirntötender Kasernentrott, brutale Strafen und skrupelloses Verheizen im Kampf gegen vietnamesische und algerische Freiheitsbewegungen. Desertion oder Selbstmord waren daher keine Seltenheit. Und die Heimkehrer hatten sich gemäss Artikel 94 des Militärstrafgesetzes vor einem Divisionsgericht zu verantworten.
