| Description: |
| This is a rare saber by Robert Mole made for the Confederacy. With a 35 ¾-inch blade, it has a 41 ½-inch overall length. A single 25 ½-inch unstopped fuller runs along the upper edge of the blade. The nearly straight edge has no etching and shows patches of mild age and light discolorization. Itās broad back is clearly marked āMOLEā. Most British made sabers produced for export to the Confederacy were un-marked and do not bear British military stampings. The 1853 Pattern sabers that do bear a makerās mark are rare. A large, flat brass mounted hilt features a wide, flat knuckle bow has two branches for the counterguard and a quillion ending in a flat disc. The hilt has a rich bronze colored patina exhibits grips of original checkered leather that are riveted to the tang with five small rivets. Leather grips are worn with spots of dryness. The hilt is tight and retains its original washer pad. The excellent condition original unadorned heavy iron scabbard has turned brown with an even freckling. There are two ring mounts that are tight and each secures a 1 ¼-inch diameter iron sword ring. The throat collar is secured with two setscrews. Scabbard has two light dings. This Robert Mole saber and scabbard is an excellent example that a Confederate cavalryman likely used in service during the American Civil War. |
