Description:
36 Caliber; 98% blue, Excellent bore, Excellent grips, 7.5'' barrel, Mfg. 1851 This Colt Navy is a early third model. Recently found in Switzerland. We speculate that it maybe a factory engraved piece for one of the European Expositions. Left lug has a panel-oval picture of Sam Colt. Donut scroll Gustave Young style engraving. Inscription panel on the backstrap is blank, Burl walnut grips. Finish shows traces of very light corrosion overall and some minor refinishing, but markings and engraving are untouched. Bore, grips and mechanics are excellent. 96% silver, strong cylinder scene with one small rust spot on cylinder. Matching numbers; serial numbers 5597,5604 and 5605 are all presentations from Sam Colt. Colt 1851 Navy S/N 6354 pictured on page 46 of Wilsons Colt Engraving Book seems to have an identical panel picture of Sam Colt with a presentation. In a book by Robert Jordan titled Colt Percussion Engraving Styles, he features a 49 Pocket model s/n 38385. He identifies the engraver as W.L. Ormsby. This Navy s/n 5602 is obviosly by the same engraver with the fish on the hammer and a panelportrait of an unidentified person. We speculate that gun engravers were not expert protrait artists and it's an attempt to depict Sam Colt?? In any case, the portrait on 5602 is identical to the one on 38385. Original case with flask and cap box came with the pistol. A unique mechanical feature of the pistol which appears to be original is the wedge screw. It is flush with the surface engraved and is made to engage the cylinder pin lug. The gun came with the original case which was modified by removing the interior compartments and cloth. It will be included and can be restored. A larger original case is now included with an original mold, oil bottle, cap box, and screwdriver which may not be of the same period., WILSONS COLT ENGRAVING pp 46, s/n 56xx
