| 60 Caliber; mint bore, mint stock, 5.5'' barrel, Cased pair of Howdah pistols manufactured by William Greener of Birmingham England c.1850's. Howdah pistols were popular in the British Empire era, used in Africa and India usually for defense against dangerous animals. Browned finish Damascus steel double barrels with casehardened locks and grip caps. Blued finish trigger guards. Stocked in walnut with checkered grip. Traps on the grip caps for percussion caps. Each is engraved in a single line on the concave barrel ribs "W.GREENER MAKER/BY APPOINTMENT/TO H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT". Both pistols are in near mint -excellent overall condition, actions function well. A few minor dings and dents on the stocks. The wooden case is in over all very good condition showing some age. Fiber material compartmentalized interior, with round ball mold, wooden cleaning rod with jag and cupped screw on tips, copper and brass powder flask marked "SYKES", bone handled screw driver tool, and a small paper container with percussion caps-German Braun & Bloem manufacture.
