| Description: |
| 44 Henry; good bore, good stock, 24'' barrel, U.S. martially marked Henry rifle. Original finish on the barrel, has turned a light patina with traces of dull blue finish inside the grooves on both sides. The brass frame has seen some light cleaning in the past, now a mustard color patina. Variant with lever latch. Original fixed front sight and rear ladder sight, the rear missing the elevation slider. U.S. inspector marks appear on the right side of the barrel near the frame "C.G.C." and on the left side of the frame " H C". The top of the barrel is stamped in two lines "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN, CT.". The serial number 3511 appears on top of the barrel near the frame. The walnut stock is stamped matching under the tang on top, and the serial number also appears on the left side of the lower tang, hidden by the stock. The buttplate has a small "C" inspector mark on the right side of the heel. There are no visible inspector marks on the stock. There are a few small dings on the frame and barrel, with many on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. Inside the butt trap are 4 original cleaning rod sections. Mechanic are fine. Accompanying this rifle are several copies of the Civil War records and some post war documents concerning a Civil War veteran Thomas Huffman. Thomas was the brother of the man who was issued this rifle by the military during the Civil War. And Thomas had possession of this particular rifle after the war, along with the Henry rifle he privately purchased personally. The rifles passing down through the family until purchased by the seller. According to seller notes he purchased both rifles directly from the descendents of the Civil War veteran Thomas Huffman, who served with the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company K, as a private. Thomas survived the war, dying in 1881, apparently from an illness conceived during the war, as many of the documents appear to be some sort or legal action over the illness. Thomas's private rifle was personalized by having his name engraved on the side of the frame, a copy of the photo of that rifle is in the paperwork. Antique, s/n 35xx |
