| This item is a leather thong whip which was picked up at a concentration camp by a capturing GI during WW2. Handmade, likely by prisoner in the camp. 12" wooden handle with 12"+ leather thongs. The item remains in the original box the GI mailed it and other items home in. The box is tattered, two lid end pieces detached but in the box, and retains the address info on top of the lid. Also a hand written list of what was originally inside the box, "3 lace clothes, whip, box of coins, small flag, fountain pen, belt buckle, dark glasses, name plate". Only the whip remains. Includes a copy of the capturing GI, William Yockum's obit. The obit states that Mr. Yochum served with Patton's 3rd Army in the 95th Div., and also with the 9th Army which liberated several concentration camps. With a note that Mr. Yochum has a voice recording at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. |
