Description:
8.15x46mm; 95% blue, excellent bore, very good stock, 29'' barrel, This Wehrmanngewehr rifle represents an example of a conversion from a surplus GEW 98 and parts to a single loading target rifle, the magazine well having a wooden block with a cartridge channel. The top of the receiver ring has been scrubbed of original markings, and is marked with an unknown logo, intertwined S, A and H. The left side of the receiver ring is stamped with a small "GECADO-SUHL" over commercial crown/B, U and G proofs. The barrel is proofed on the left side with the same proofing over the serial number. The top of the barrel chamber is marked with the caliber designation "8,15x46.". The straight handled bolt is matching with the last two digits of the serial. The cocking piece is mis-matched. The stock has an illegible number across the bottom behind the sling swivel base. No other parts are numbered. The rifle has the standard inverted V front sight. The original GEW rear sight sleeve is present, marked on the sides with added graduations for the 8.15mm cartridge. The original GEW tangent sight has been removed and a new sight added, which is marked on the side of its base with the "HAENEL" arrow logo, and has the standardized graduations for 100, 175 and 300 meters, and is windage adjustable. This updated sight was likely added at a later time when these sights became available. This rifle also has a silver plate on the bottom of the forend near the upper swivel which is engraved with a previousl owners name "P. Rother". The metal finish shows even slight thinning overall with no major areas of wear. The wood shows some scattered and minor handling dings and scratches. The bore is bright and sharp. Original cleaning rod is present. From the collection of Robert Simpson, and pictured along with some more information on page 436 of the book Training Rifles of Third Reich Germany., Training Rifles of Thired Reich Germany pp 436, s/n 11xx
