| Description: |
| 22 LONG RIFLE; 85% blue, excellent bore, very good stock, 30.5'' barrel, The period between the wars in Germany saw a wide vairiety of conversions of Gew.98 service rifles to Wehrmanngewehr types and others converted to 22 caliber for target shooting and marksmanship training. Many were produced by private gunsmiths, some by the more well known firearms producers. This is an example of a very well done conversion to a single loader in 22 caliber. The original markings on the receiver have been scrubbed and the rifle totally refinished. Mounted in a European walnut stock and handguard. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the receiver ring, on the bolt handle shank, and on the buttplate. These are all matching. No other parts are numbered. The right side of the receiver ring is also stamped with crown/N, B and U proofs. The left side of the barrel is stamped with crown/N and Nitro proofs. The barrel has a permanent 22 caliber liner and chamber installed, and the bolt has been expertly modified, cupped head to fit around the barrels chamber, sliding rail extractor attached using the original extractor collar. The magazine well has a wooden block platform installed. Original fixed inverted V front sight. GEW 98 tangent rear sight, the left side of the base with an added mark for 50 meters. Original cleaning rod and leather sling. The metal and wood show fairly light wear and handling. Mechanically fine., s/n 11xx |
