| Description: |
| 45-70 Government; 70% blue, fair bore, good stock, 33'' barrel, Although these rifles were not adopted for U.S. military service, many were made c.1873-1882 for foreign contracts, notably Turkey for use during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. It is interesting however that this example appears to be marked for the Connecticut National Guard. A plate on the bottom of the butt is hand stamped "CONN / 704". The top of the stock heel has a faint "C / 12" and a number "3" is stamped on top of the stock behind the receiver. These markings in the wood are faint as it appears the stock has been lightly sanded. Stamped on the left side of the receiver "PEABODY'S PAT. / JULY 22, 1862 / MANF'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV. R.I.". Over the left side of the barrels chamber is marked "EE P" with a small "W" stamped near the edge of the receiver. Fixed front sight, ladder rear sight with ramp. Falling block action single shot. Original cleaning rod present. There appears to be no provision for sling swivels. Condition: the blued finish has aged and turned a blue/patina mix with lkight spotting overall on the metal. As mentioned the wood has been lightly refinished. The actions functions well. The bore is dark, showing strong rifling., s/n 3 |
