45/70; 75% blue, good bore, fair stock, 24'' barrel, This Model 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield was manufactured in 1876 and was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army. The gun, in both full-length and carbine versions, was widely used in subsequent battles against the Indians. This is a cut down rifle with a beaded blade front sight and an elevation adjustable ladder rear sight. The hinged breechblock which opens like a trapdoor is stamped with MODEL / 1873 / Eagle Head with crossed arrows / U.S. The S/N 63896 is in the top of the frame. The action works. The metal condition is thinning and has spotting overall. The roll over on the buttplate is stamped U.S. The walnut stock has been cut down, the stock has few handling marks, it has a repaired crack at the wrist. It goes around the wrist on each side to the trigger guard. ANTIQUE, s/n 638xx
