| Description: |
| This is a 30-inch curved blade with maker mark, A & A S (August & Albert Schnitzler) cavalry sword. The unsharpened blade has dark spots, the brass hilt has three branches, a brass pommel cap and an unadorned guard, all of which have turned a dark mustard. The standard features include a relatively straight wooden handle covered with leather and twisted brass wire which has only a couple loops remaining. It has an iron scabbard with iron mountings. The black finish has thinned and is a mild patina. It has a couple dents and a very slight bend to it. The A.&A.S. could stand for August & Albert Schnitzler of Solingen, Germany. According to Bezdek's German Swords and Sword Makers, the company was in business from 1864-1873. They had offices in Birmingham, England from 1864-1873, and sold cavalry sabers to northern dealers during the American Civil War, 1864-1865., |
