| Description: |
| very good bore, very good stock, 32 5/8'' barrel, An example of an 1873 Trapdoor rifle with the very rare Metcalf experimental cartridge block attachment, with only about 1000 produced for trials in the serial number range of 60000-74000. This rifle is an original made for those trials, however most if not all were reworked and the Metcalf mounts disposed of. This particular rifle has been fitted with a hand made reproduction of the original mount on the right side of the stock, according to the consignee the work was done over 50 year ago, copied from an original found in a museum. Included is a reproduced Metcalf wooden cartridge block complete with paper seal and vintage cartridges, made at the same time. The quality of the reproduced parts is exceptional and showing enough age now it's hard to tell from original. The rifle itself is in very good overall condition. The metal finish has aged to a blue/patina mix with some light surface rust spotting. The stock has a sharp ELA inspectors stamp on the left side, with no date as is usually seen. Sharp script circle P firing proof on the bottom of the grip. US marked buttplate tang. Breechblock is marked with the 1873 date/eagleshead over US. And the left side of the barrel is stamped with the V/P and eagleshead proof. Original slotted ramrod. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The Metcalf cartridge box locks into place as is should on the right side of the rifle and makes for a great display of a very rare experimental trapdoor. Included are side by side photographs of the originals with the reproduced., s/n 617xx |
