Description:
30 WCF; fair bore, fair stock, 20'' barrel, Nic-named “Spruce” guns of the WW1 era, of which about 1800 were acquired for issue to U.S. troops in Washington and Oregon state areas and used to guard lumber industry locations, spruce wood was valuable as it was used for the new booming wartime aircraft industry. A standard Winchester saddle ring carbine, original finish has worn to gray, plain walnut stock shows handing. Original fixed front and ladder rear sights. Standard Winchester markings of the period. The top of the frame over the chamber is stamped US (no periods) over the left side and the flaming bomb over the right, flanking the oval proof mark. The bottom of the frame below the serial number is stamped with the initials "H.A.M.", indicating that this carbine was once part of the collection of Harold A. McCallum of Monroe, Oregon (Thanks to Tom Wallace for this information, as we thought the markings might have been inspector initials). The metal is worn, but there is no rust or pitting. The magazine tube has a dent and slight bulge about 3 inches from the upper end. The stock has a crack at on the bottom of the toe, another on the left side behind the frame, and tight cracks behind the upper and lower tangs. Also a small chip of wood is missing in front the buttplate tang on the heel. All markings are clear and legible. The rifle is mechanically fine. The bore shows wear with corrosion in the grooves. C&R/FFL, s/n 8397xx
