Eigentlich vom Design her eine Maschinenpistole im Kaliber .22LR aber durch den langen Lauf mit Schalldämpferattrappe fällt die GSG-16 in die Klasse der Selbstladegewehre. Für Links- und Rechtshänder gibt es einen beidseitig nutzbaren Spannhebel im MP-Style, Magazinentnahmehebel und Sicherungshebel. Der mehrstufig verstellbare Schiebeschafft kann durch das Klick-Fix-System mit einem zusätzlichen Magazin für den schnellen Wechsel ausgestattet werden. Die Ghost Ring Sights dienen der schnellen Zielerfassung, wenn keine Optik verbaut wurde. Fünf Picatinny-Schienen ermöglichen den Anbau von diversen Zubehörteilen jeglicher Art. Unter den Picatinny-Schienen am Vorderschaft befindet sich ein M-LOKĀ® System, so dass die Waffe auch ohne Schienen geführt werden, aber gleichzeitig auch individuell mit Zubehör versehen werden kann. Der zweistufige Metallabzug ist einstellbar. Der Receiver und das Abzugsgehäuse bestehen aus hochfestem, glasfaserverstärkten Kunststoff. Dadurch erhält der Schütze eine extrem robuste und führige Waffe.
