The G41 is a battle rifle manufactured and used by Nazi Germany during WWII. It was largely overthrown by the G43.

By 1940, it became obvious that a higher rate of fire power was needed to replace the existing bolt-action rifles to improve the infantry's combat efficiency. The Army issued a demand to various manufacturers, among which Mauser and Walther submitted prototypes that were very similar.

Some restrictions were put in place :

  • no holes were to be bored into the barrel for tapping gas for the loading mechanism
  • the rifle shouldn't have any moving parts on the surface
  • in case the auto-loading mechanism failed, a bolt action was to be included

Both models featured a mechanism known as the "Bang" system, named after its Danish designer Søren H. Bang.

In this system, propellant gases were captured by a cone-shaped gas trap at the muzzle, which in turn deflected them to operate a small piston which in turn pushed on a long piston rod that opened the breech and re-loaded the gun.

Both designs included a 10 round magazine that was loaded using two of the stripper clips from the K98, using the standard
