| Description: |
| 44 Caliber; fair bore, fair grips, 7.5'' barrel, Civilian variation, manufactured c.1848. Early production by Colt. Matching serial numbers with the small die stamps. Wedge is not numbered. Round barrel with octagonal breech end (Dragoon barrel) stamped on the top flat, partially obscured by the added dovetailed rear sight "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY", and on the left frame "COLT'S/PATENT" over "US". The US stamp often appears on the civilian production arms. Cylinder retains approximately 20%- of the ranger and Indian fight scene roll engraving, the banner marked "DRAGOON U.S.M.R.". Brass trigger guard and backstrap show only trace silver plated finish in protected corners. Originally blued with casehardened frame, the metal has aged to a fairly even patina overall. Walnut grip appears to have been sanded and is undersized to the frame. The action functions fine. The loading lever catch is worn but does hold the lever. The screw at the front of the trigger guard is an old replacement. Note the rear sight added on top of the barrel flat. The bore shows strong rifling with levels of pitting throughout.
