Description:
577 Caliber; good bore, fair stock, 35.75'' barrel, 2nd type conversion to breechloading soon after the American Civil War ended, using a surplus British P.1853 3 band rifle musket. These were converted by both Colt and Remington at the time, this example has no markings denoting who the conversion was done by. Not many were produced as other types of conversions such as the Allin and Robert's were more popular and purpose made breechloading weapons were developed very soon afterward. Some sources estimate approximately 2000 were built. None were officially adopted by the U.S. Military, however some were purchased by State militias, Maryland being one of the major buyers, arming two companies with this type of conversion. However only around 200 were issued. Un-sold rifles were eventually released for sale on the civilian market. Survival rate of these rifles in civilian hands was likely low, making these rather scarce, especially in original configuration. The left side of the barrel breech is stamped with remnants of British proofing, and there appears to the a partial Belgian Liege proof, most of it removed when the barrel breech was cut for the breechbolt. Metal has turned an oxidized patina overall with brass parts darkened except the buttplate. The brass buttplate is unmarked. The brass trigger guard tang is marked "LSM" with a lengthwise stamped number "712". The lockplate is scrubbed of any markings. Walnut stock, showing age, wear and handling, with a crack on the left side flat and cracks on both undersides from the front trigger guard tang to the lockplate on the right and up to the edge of the flat on the left side. Small old chip behind the upper tang. The action functions well and the bore has shine with scattered corrosion/pitting. Original ramrod and ladder rear sight. Missing the buttplate heel screw. Antique., s/n LSM7xx
