Description:
Original WW2 vintage single rifle wooden storage/transit box for a K98k Mauser rifle. Pinewood construction with interlocked corner joints. A standard K98 fits perfectly into the internal mounts, the bolt fits into a retaining block with the box bottom notched for the recoil lug and shroud. Only a remnant of a label remains on the box lid. Inside the bottom of the box is an eagle/swaz ink stamp roundel with markings "Kommando der Schutzpolizei Waffenmeisterel Kladenfurt" (roughly translates to Command, Protection Police, Armourer). Protective metal ends screwed in place on the lid ends and box corners. Two post studs with hook closures for the lid. The box bottom is screwed in place, with screws through the bototm holding the internal blocks in place. Leather strips added at points of contact inside the box. One leather strip under the lid is missing. In Good intact condition, having a couple edge chips on the bottom and a 3 inch crack on top of the lid at one end. The wide end of the box bottom has a couple cracks with two nail repairs to secure. NOTE: The rifle pictured in the box is NOT included, for visual of the rifle mounted only. An additional note from Robert Simpson, as we are aware of controversy on certain forums of the originality of this piece: "I purchasd this box at one of the gun shows in Germany in the 1980's, I believe it was Dortmund. I wanted it for a photo prop for my trainer book which was in the works at the time, as I thought it may be a box for a 22 training rifle of some sort. Over the years I had forgotton about the box and it wasn't put into the book. If someone has definite information about it please let me know.". A additional side note: a DSM or KKW 22 training rifle does not fit well into the box, K98 rifle fits near perfectly.
