| Description: |
| Coats such as these were private purchase items of clothing usually worn by officers, purchased by them or sent to them by family members as supplemental winter clothing worn over the standard uniform. These coats were highly sought after by soldiers serving on the Eastern front especially. The back, inside of the left pocket has blue ink stamped markings, some of which are a bit hard to make out, appearing to read "Felzhaue Schaiet" over two illegible stamps, and "Wieg.t. Kohlmarkt 2". Also a series of numbers 96, 54, 80 and 62 and a date 1942. Thick brown natural sheeps wool inside with occasional natural white spots of wool. The pocket corners and wood toggle closures are reinforced with gray colored leather. There appears to have been a sheeps wool collar lining which has been removed or torn away at some point long ago, leaving fraying along the inner seam of the collar, otherwise the coat is complete with all the loops for the toggles present and intact. Each end of the collar has small metal loop clasps which are rusty, possibly used to attach a hood. The collar has a sngle tab on theleft side which has two button holes, and a white plastic on each end. There is a small tear on the bottom of the front seam, otherwise no holes or major damage. This coat has obviously been worn, with soiling and staining overall and some worn areas. Each sleeve measures 18 inches from under the arm to the end of the sleeve. The front seam measures 28 5/8 inches from the neck to the bottom edge. It is possible that the sleeves and bottom edge have been trimmed a bit due to the slightly uneven edges. I have seen pictures of German officers on the Eastern Front wearing these coats with a variety of wool inner linings, and at least one picture of a Russian soldier wearing a very similar coat, probably found in a bunker or picked up after a battle., |
