| Description: |
| 8mm (M88); 95% blue, excellent bore, very good stock, 20'' barrel, A thank you to DocAV on gunboards for help in identification of this firearm. This gun was produced by Haenel as a low production prototype known as the Mod. 09 and was chambered for the German M88 cartridge (8x57J) as used with the M1888 Commission rifles and carbines. This firearm was intended as an improvement on the earlier M1888 series guns and I will quote DocAV here: "Improvements: 1- Barrel jacket omitted. 2- Internal box magazine holding 5 rounds, receiver slotted for use with standard 5 round stripper clips, no need for the Mannlicher type clip, push button floorplate release on the left side near the trigger guard. 3- Gas shield added on the bolt with a flange on the cocking piece. 4- Longer turned down bolt handle. 5- Mauser type short rear tangent sight with the front sight protected similar to the Kar88 and Kar88/07, screw-in cleaning rod similar to the Turkish M1908 engineer's musketoon. And, according to DocAV these were mainly offered for sale to China and Paraguay, China did not have interest, however Paraguay may have purchased a small number of the Mod. 09 carbines for Military Academy use. There is also some speculation on possible intent for South Africa. This example has few markings, the left side of the receiver is marked "Mod. 09 Cal. 7.9mm". The right side of the receiver ring is stamped with three crown/S Suhl commercial proofs. Receiver and bolt are stamped with matching serial numbers. The bolt handle shank is stamped with both crown/S and crown/N proofs and the bolt head is crown/N proofed. The stock has a tiny crown proof on the right side close to the buttplate and another on the front of the grip. The bottom of the butt has a larger crown/S proof and a six point star over H mark/proof nearer the sling swivel. The original cleaning rod is present and a leather sling which appears to be period is attached, the sling is worn and broken at one end. Original blue finish and walnut stock, mechanically fine with a very smooth action and bright sharp bore. C&R/FFL, s/n 10xx |
