| 69 Caliber; poor bore, good stock, 42'' barrel, Harpers Ferry manufacture dated 1845. This musket has a small bit of provenance having a signed letter from a relative which states "This gun was carried in the Civil War by James Hanna who lived South of West Liberty. Raymond Fitzgerald acquired the gun in the early 1900's from James Hanna.". The note is signed by "Alverta James-grandaughter of James Hanna". The barrel tand is stamped with the date 1845. The left side of the barrel is clearly stamped "V/P/eagleshead" along with "AR over P. The muskets metal has turned and even dark patina overall. Pitting on top of the barrel around the bolster area. The walnut stock is dark and show lots of handling wear with old dings and dents, shallow gouges on the right upper forend and chipping on some edges. No cracks or major damage. Bore is dark/rusty. The lock functions well. Trumpet shaped ramrod. Includes the original bayonet with scabbard. The bayonet has an 18 inch triangular blade and is marked "B/ME" and is in Fair condition having surface rusting and some pitting. The scabbard is intact, leather is dry and cracked. Also the original cartridge box complete with the internal metal containers and brass US plate. The flaps closure strap is torn. The leather is dry and there are no legible markings. |
