Description:
7.63mm Mauser; 97% blue, good bore, very good stock, 11.75'' barrel, Scarce Mauser C96 carbine, early Large Ring Transitional. Mauser made very few Large Ring Transitional carbines that shared the same receiver and trigger assembly as the earlier Conehammers. Unlike its predecessor, these guns had a tapered barrel with a short ramped serrated sight base and a hooded front sight with bead insert. This example has an 11.75 inch barrel and a pinned 50-500 rear sight. Chamber is marked with a 3-line address, WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF A/N, the s/n 63 is on left chamber flat and repeated on left side of receiver. In the central recess of the receiver is a small rectangular insert that appears as an old factory repair. The left side barrel extension is marked with a Crown/Crown/U. an antler proof is on the right chamber flat. Other features include long extractor and separately retained firing pin. The barrel/barrel extension, frame and floorplate are rust blued while the extractor, components of rear sight, bolt stop, firing pin retainer and shoulder stock lug are fire blued. In this case, all components are matched to s/n 63 except for the buttstock that is from a different gun and cannot be easily released from the receiver. The buttstock is numbered 1004 and has an original horn buttplate molded with the intertwined MW monogram. PROVENANCE: the Friedrich-Wilhelm Dauphin Collection, Germany. CONDITION: the carbine retains about 97% rust blue with mild thinning and sharp edge wear. The fire blued parts have largely faded except the buttstock lug that retains most of its original blue, nicely complementing the balance of the gun. Both the forend and buttstock have been lightly refinished to present a uniform, pleasing color and surface., s/n 63
