| 45-70 Government; good bore, good stock, 33'' barrel, Connecticut state contract rifle. Original blued finish, walnut stock and forend held with two spring kept bands. Fixed front and ladder rear sights. Marked on the left side of the frame "PEABODY'S PAT. / JULY 22, 1862 / MAN'F'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV. R.I.". Stamped over the left side of the barrel near the frame with eagleshead and P proofs, EE and W inspector marks. The plate on the toe of the buttstock is stamped "CONN / 704". The top of the stock behind the frame is stamped with a large number 3. The metal finish has turned a blue/patina mix with some faint dark spotting overall. The wood was lightly sanded long ago leaving no other visible markings. Original ramrod. Mechanically fine. This rifle is an example of one contracted to receive the new barrel chambered for the 45/70 Govt cartridge with Martini type rifling. Mechanically fine. The bore is a bit dark showing corrosion in the grooves along the cut rifling. The rifling is strong. Antique |
