| 52 Caliber; fair bore, fair stock, 21'' barrel, Dark rust patina metal. Walnut stock, no legible markings except carved into the right butt "TJ". Top of breechblock is marked "US / S.NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN / 1849". "JH" inspector initials on the left side of the barrel chamber. Round barrel with iron bands. Missing the side lever and cleaning rod. Bent sling bar. Stock has several cracks around the area of the frame. Barrel bore is .52 caliber, and is rifled with 6 grooves. This indicates the likelyhood that this carbine was part of the famous "Hall Carbine Affair". Some misleading information is the caliber of .58. Hall carbines purchased from an arms dealer named Arthur Eastman of New Hampshire, who had purchased them from Government stores at a very nominal fee, had had the chambers enlarged to accept .58 caliber ammunition, the barrels rifled and left in .52 caliber. These were then sold at a high profit of $22.00 each to a General John Freemont in St. Louis Missouri, the financing for the purchase arranged through JP Morgan. Eventually in 1861 a Colonel Ripley of the U.S. Ordnance Dept came across documents about the sale, and realized these were the guns that he had released for sale from inventory for $3.50 each. A Congressional inquiry looked into the sale and charges eventually filed. More details on the "Hall Carbine Affair" can be found via the web. These rifled 1843 Model carbines saw very heavy use during the Civil War, with many issued to Illinois Cavalry regiments. |
