| 20 Gauge; fair bore, fair stock, 26'' barrel, An example of the original "Forager" trapdoor shotguns issued to troops on the Western frontiers. With very few produced, most information says 1,376 total, these guns are very rare. 26" smoothbore round barrel, chambered for a short 20 Ga brass shotshell. Breechblock is stamped with the slanted 1881 date. Lockplate with three line "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/183" and the American Eagle motif. Visible but illegible inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock. Light but legible circle P proof on the botom of the stocks wrist. U.S. stamped buttplate tang. Metal has turned a dark rust brown patina overall, with spots of heavy surface rust. The barrel is missing the large brass bead sight. Walnut stock showing its age with small cracks for and aft of the lockplate, crack on the left side between the receiver and rear tie bolt. Small crack at the toe of the stock, and a small crack at the end of the upper tang. The bore has plenty of shine, with spots of pitting throughout. The lock functions fine with a two click tumbler. The extractor functions sporadically. Antique, s/n 13xx |
