| 50/70; 45% blue, very good bore, good stock, 33'' barrel, U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1866 SECOND ALLIN CONVERSION TRAPDOOR RIFLE Approximately 25,000 Civil War era muzzle loading rifle-muskets were converted at Springfield Armory to Allin's Model 1866 breech loading system and rechambered to .50-70 CF. The Model 1866 received it's baptism by fire in the hands of U.S. troops in the Hayfield Fight and Wagon Box Fight, both a day apart on the 1st and 2nd of August 1867 along the Bozeman Trail, in which the severely outnumbered U.S. troops successfully held off several hundred Native American warriors. The tail of the lock is dated “1864” and the front of the lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The breech is dated “1866”. The top of the butt plate is marked “U.S.” The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are thinning with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is dark and shows typical handling. The bore is in good condition, with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a nice example of an early trapdoor rifle! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction., |
