Description (Top):

In the decades following World War II, a great number of Pistol 08 (P08) were available at very reasonable prices.   However, the Swiss Parabellum pistols were very expensive at that time, and so the Swiss shooters and Swiss gunsmiths became inventive. German Pistol 08 (P08) were converted to meet off-duty shooting regulations.   The most important conversions were changing the caliber from 9mm Para to 7.65mm Para by replacing the barrel. The exchange barrel was given the weapon number in accordance with Swiss standards. A grip back safety had to be retrofitted as well. In the post-war period, labor costs were relatively low and material costs relatively high, which made such elaborate conversion work economically interesting.   A conversion of Pistol 08 (P08) was obvious, since the first parabellum pistols in Switzerland (Pistol Mod. 1900 and Pistol 1900/06 DWM) came from the same DWM factories.   Such weapons are an interesting variation and were produced in different versions. Unfortunately, this is neither an original Pistol 08 (P08) nor an original Pistol 1900/06 DWM or Pistol 1900/06 W+F (Pistol 06/24).   According to today's List of allowed accessories, 27.132, such weapons may no longer be used in official off-duty shooting, as they are not one of the listed variants (concluding: Pistol Mod. 1900, Pistol 1900/06 DWM, Pistol 1900/06 W+F (Pistol 06/24) and Pistol 06/29). The prohibition of such converted parabellum pistols is already contained in the 1981 Auxiliary Equipment List (see Chapter 3.8, Attachement).

Pistol 08, Swiss Modification This Pistol 08, Swiss Modification was converted from a Pistol 08 (P08). The original model was manufactured in 1935 (code “G” on the fork housing) by Mauserwerke in Oberndorf am Neckar (code “S/42”). The modification included the fitting of a new barrel in caliber 7.65mm Parabellum, the attachment of a backstrap safety and the change of the sights from a V-sight to a U-sight. The gun was then re-blued. On this gun, the “Gesichert" (safe) lettering has not been milled out, so “Gesichert” (safe) is visible when the gun is not secured, which is confusing. It is a great pity to see that an almost perfect and matching-numbered Pistol 08 (P08) was modified in this way. However, this was common in the years after the Second World War, as the Pistol 08 (P08) was available cheaply in large quantities. The Swiss Parabellum pistols were still in active service in the army and private models were very expensive to buy. Pistol 08, Swiss Modification GER: Die vorliegende Waffe ist eine auf Schweizer Norm umgerüstete Pistol 08 (P08) aus der Fertigung der Deutschen Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik (DWM) von 1915. Die Waffe wurde 1966 für CHF 100.- gekauft (Quittung: Picture) und dann im Jahr 1967 von der Büchsenmacherei Zimmermann und Widmer in Basel für CHF 147.50 umgebaut (Quittung: Picture). Ein Ersatzmagazin wurde für weitere CHF 15.- erworben. Der Laufwechsel ist nicht auf der Umbauquittung erwähnt, vermutlicherweise wurde dieser bereits vorher gewechselt. Neben den im Vorfeld bereits erfolgten Laufwechsel von 9mm Para auf 7.65mm Para umfasste der Umbau den Einbau einer Griffrückensicherung. Dafür mussten Nuten gefräst sowie spezielle Teile beschafft werden. Der originale Schriftzug "Gesichert" wurde ausgefräst, da die Sicherung nun genau umgekehrt funktioniert. Nach den Arbeiten wurden die Teile neu brüniert. Ebenfalls wurde der Abzug neu reguliert und die Visierung auf eine U-Visierung angepasst. Pistol 08, Swiss Modification The weapon shown (weapon number 8277) was developed from a German Pistol 08 (P08) of 1916. A barrel in caliber 7.65mm was mounted, also the safety was adapted (installation of a grip back safety analogous to the Swiss Parabellum pistols). Strangely enough, the safety now works wrong; when the word "secured" is displayed, the gun is unsecured and ready to fire. The weapon should thus comply with the Swiss regulations on off-duty shooting. The Pistol 08 (P08) was available after World War II in relatively large numbers and at reasonable prices, as the technology was outdated by developments during the war years (for example Pistol 38 (P38)).   These conversions were made exclusively for private individuals (shooters), never for the Swiss Army.   On the side the owner had his name immortalized on a plaque ("Fritz Troller, Solothurn").
